“Historic” BEE Step: First Black SA Graduates in Configuration Management
25 November 2004
South Africa today achieves a “historic BEE step forward” when the first set of black experts in advanced configuration management, graduate this afternoon at a ceremony in Midrand.
ConfigOnline, South Africa’s only dedicated Configuration Management company with exclusive rights to the US-based CM II program, will be handing over their certificates at the training venue at 4pm this afternoon, says Carol Cotty, MD of ConfigOnline.
“We are proud to be associated with this breakthrough which is evidence of how BEE can have practical effects which will benefit the entire country,” says Cotty.
Three of the five black graduates, Ishmael Rangongo (37), Thembani Mengisi (26), and Denesh Ajodha (33), are configuration specialists from Rand Water, while Myendren Naidoo (37) is from Hillside Aluminum in Richard’s Bay, and Lochan Ramchuran (37) is from the SA Air Force.
“Configuration Management is the method through which requirements are managed to ensure maximum efficiency and integrity in any process or product,” Cotty says.
Traditional configuration management focussed on the engineering application of producing a product or service, and then attending to bugs or market demands later. CM II, developed in the US, adopts a radical new approach by ensuring that requirements lead the process, and that the product or service complies with the requirements. In addition, it can be applied throughout the organisation and within any industry.
The 12 day course, run by experts qualified by the Arizona based international Institute of Configuration Management, has seen all the students qualify with marks of 75% and over, allowing them to join a small circle of just over 4,500 people worldwide who have CM II certification.
“These graduates will now be in a position to lead the way with these management skills for their companies and organisations,” Cotty says. “They will ensure that South Africa is now comparable with the very latest international business methodology, as used by high profile organisations as NASA, Boeing, Hewlett-Packard, Delphi, Lear Corporation, the US Postal Services, Alstrom, and Lockheed Martin.”
In all of these instances, the corporations have been able to streamline operating efficiencies, reduce rework and waste and deliver correct products first time round, thereby increasing profits using the CMII methodology.
